Hotly tipped UK singer-songwriter Laura Marling has just confirmed details of her second album, I Speak Because I Can, due April 8 via Astralwerks.
Produced by Ethan Johns, who has worked with Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams and Ray LaMontagne previously, and recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, I Speak Because I Can is said to be Marling's "coming of age album" housing "ten songs imbued with a new richness, ripeness and sophistication, marked by homespun tales and sparse instrumentation." Mumford & Sons, who are slowly growing their own sizeable fanbase, once again served as Marling's backing band for this effort.
According to the press announcement, Marling and Johns will reteam in the coming months to work on another album's worth of material, with a late 2010 release in mind. A brief run of North American shows have been booked for the month of February.
We have been a little slow in making updates to Real World Remixed recently, but that's about to change. We've added a new sample pack today, Charlie Winston's 'Hobo', one of the biggest hits of last summer in France, and that's just the start of a flurry of activity.
Coming up in the next few weeks we are going to have the first in a new series of packs and competitions from Peter Gabriel.
'Not One of Us' will be made available here at the same time as it is released as the first 'double a-side' from his collaborative 'Scratch My Back' project.
The 'double a-side' will see Peter's cover of The Magnetic Fields song 'The Book of Love' and their, or more precisely Stephin Merritt's version of 'Not One of Us' released as the first pair of songs from 'Scratch My Back'
More details will be coming soon, particularly on the competition. In the meantime, we hope you like Charlie Winston's 'Hobo'
"The gorgeous Like a Hobo - a No 1 single in France - goes the whole pensive hog, with minor chords and whistling, while Tongue-Tied, a flirtation with jazz that's partly sung in Suffolk-accented French, is a showcase for Winston's excellent band. A worthy contender for la petite sensation de 2010 in the UK." The Guardian
It seems like moments ago, but these pictures of Greg are from August 2008 when he was working with Dengue Fever and from just a few weeks ago with cellist Peter Gregson (recording a forthcoming B&W Society of Sound album 'Terminal')- so he's served his time with us on many great sessions.
He's been gone just over a week now, it's cold, and we're missing him.
In this first instalment of a mini podcast series introducing 'Scratch My Back', Peter talks about the first four tracks from the album, and we hear excerpts from the final studio masters.
Peter Gabriel will release his 'Scratch My Back' album project on February 15th 2010 on Virgin Records. The album is the first part of a series of song exchanges in which Peter and other leading artists reinterpret each others songs. In this first installment we hear excerpts from, and the stories behind Peter's recordings of Heroes, The Boy In The Bubble, Mirrorball and Flume.
The Creole Choir of Cuba were recently in The Wood Room recording material for Real World Records and The B&W Society of Sound
In glorious songs like Edem Chanté (Listen To Us!), The Creole Choir celebrate the history of their Haitian descendents enslaved to the Caribbean from West Africa. The Creole Choir's ten remarkable singers come from Camagüey, Cuba's third city, down towards the eastern end of the island. They grew up and studied music in this old colonial town, designated a UNESCO World heritage Site in 2008 for its colonial architecture. They have nurtured music passed down in their families since the early 19th century, gradually adding modern Haitian sounds.
